Research Centers and Institutes
South Dakota School of Mines and Technology embraces research to solve problems of industry, the military, government agencies, and to generate economic development in Rapid City, the Black Hills, and the state of South Dakota. Approximately 50 School of Mines faculty members and research staff received research awards totaling nearly $21M during the 2009 fiscal year; this represented 92 awards averaging approximately $227,000 from federal and state agencies, corporations, and direct Congressional appropriations. The awards represent 23 departments, centers, or labs and have been awarded to 42 principal investigators. More than half of all proposals submitted were funded. The National Science Foundation's average funding rate was 25 percent in 2008. .
